A Different Kind of Drumming Art

Ask a drummer about their favourite rudiment and you might get a technical explanation, a demonstration on the nearest available surface or an answer that makes absolutely no sense to anyone who doesn't play.

That's part of the appeal behind our Drumming Prints, a project that brings drummers together with graphic artist Anthony Burrill to turn the vocabulary of percussion into original artwork. Curated by Mike Dolbear, the collection features musicians from across rock, metal, pop, progressive music and beyond.

Rather than relying on portraits, drum kits or familiar band imagery, these prints find their subjects in the words, patterns and phrases that drummers use.

From Drum Rudiments to Typography

A flammadiddle might mean something very specific to a percussionist, but in the hands of a graphic artist it becomes something else entirely.

Stewart Copeland of The Police contributed Flammadiddle, while Gojira's Mario Duplantier chose Roulement de Tambour, represented through the repeated French instructions Droite! Droite! Gauche! Gauche! Elsewhere, the collection includes pieces developed with Mike Joyce of The Smiths, Pink Floyd's Nick Mason and percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie.

The designs draw on Burrill's distinctive approach to typography, with individual artworks produced using traditional techniques including letterpress and screen printing. Graphic designer and letterpress printer Theo Hersey has also collaborated on the project, bringing the craft of hand printing to many of the editions.

Signed Prints for Drummers and Music Fans

For anyone who plays drums, there's plenty here to recognise, and perhaps a few things to argue about. For everyone else, the attraction is just as much about the graphic design and the musicians involved.

The collection includes prints individually signed by the featured drummers, with selected editions also signed by the artists responsible for the artwork. Edition sizes, printing methods and other specifications are detailed on each product page.
