Cherisse Osei Autographed Print
RIGHT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT. LEFT RIGHT LEFT LEFT.
One of drumming's fundamental sticking patterns becomes the artwork in this collaboration between Cherisse Osei and Anthony Burrill, created for Teenage Cancer Trust.
Osei chose the paradiddle, her favourite rudiment to play, as the starting point for the piece. Built from alternating right and left strokes, it's a pattern drummers use to develop control, movement and coordination around the kit. Burrill strips that idea back to its essential language, replacing musical notation with the two words a drummer needs to understand the sequence: RIGHT and LEFT.
The resulting artwork is deliberately simple. Tall black letterforms are stacked across the page in two irregular columns, changing in size and position as the pattern moves from one hand to the other. There's no illustration of a drummer or drum kit. The rhythm itself provides the structure of the print.
Anthony Burrill is a British graphic artist, designer and printmaker whose work is instantly recognisable for its bold typography, direct language and traditional printmaking techniques. His work has been exhibited around the world and is held in the permanent collections of institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. His best-known works often take simple words or short phrases and turn them into powerful graphic statements.
That approach makes Burrill particularly well suited to this project. A paradiddle is usually something heard or played rather than seen; here, its basic instructions become the design. The repeated RIGHT and LEFT create their own visual rhythm across the sheet, while the texture within the black ink keeps the large letterforms from feeling mechanically perfect.
Cherisse Osei has built a career that crosses pop, rock and new wave. After starting out with The Faders, she spent six years touring and recording with Mika, before working with artists including Bryan Ferry, Paloma Faith and Kelly Jones. She joined Simple Minds in 2016, recording with the band and becoming part of their touring line-up.
Curated by drummer and educator Mike Dolbear, the artwork has been screen printed on 240gsm Shiro Echo stock by Harvey Lloyd in East Sussex. At 50 × 70cm, its larger format gives Burrill's typography plenty of room, with the black ink standing starkly against the white paper.
Only 100 prints were produced, each individually hand signed by both Cherisse Osei and Anthony Burrill.
