Kick Left Right. Kick Right Left.
Nic Collins' Alternating Triplet Groove is turned into a piece of typographic art in this limited-edition collaboration with Anthony Burrill and Theo Hersey, created for Teenage Cancer Trust's ONE TWO THREE FOUR project.
The pattern combines the bass drum with alternating strokes between the hands, switching between Kick Left Right and Kick Right Left. Written out across the page rather than shown as conventional drum notation, something designed to be played around a kit becomes immediately visual, even if you've never picked up a pair of drumsticks.
Burrill and Hersey keep the design remarkably spare. Each part of the groove is written as a line of type, repeated down the sheet with generous white space around it. As the sticking alternates, the words themselves create the pattern, with the occasional longer Kick Left Right Kick line breaking the otherwise regular shape of the composition.
Nic Collins has already packed a remarkable amount into his career as a drummer. He was still in his teens when he toured the world behind the kit with his father, Phil Collins, on the Not Dead Yet tour, before taking on the considerable task of playing drums for Genesis on their The Last Domino? reunion tour in 2021 and 2022. He has since toured with Mike + The Mechanics and pursued his own music through bands including Better Strangers and The Effect.
For Collins, that Genesis role involved learning material drawn from very different periods of the band's history, including parts originally played by his father. His ability to handle both the technical demands of the earlier material and the feel of the later songs made him an important part of the band's final tour.
The artwork brings together the distinctive graphic approach of Anthony Burrill with designer and letterpress printer Theo Hersey. Burrill is known for reducing ideas to bold combinations of words, typography and traditional print processes, while Hersey's work brings the physical craft of letterpress into the project. Here, they've taken something that exists primarily as movement between a drummer's hands and feet and reduced it to the three instructions that make it work: Kick, Left, Right.
Each print was hand printed by letterpress on 200gsm Shiro Echo paper by Theo Hersey at The Typography Workshop in London in 2025. Letterpress leaves subtle variations in ink and impression that belong to the printing process, giving the otherwise minimal black-and-white artwork a physical quality that isn't apparent from the typography alone.
Only 100 copies were produced, each individually hand signed by Nic Collins, Anthony Burrill and Theo Hersey, and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
