Diddle Egg Five brings together one of the most important percussionists of the modern era with the bold typographic work of Anthony Burrill and Theo Hersey, transforming the language of drumming into an original piece of graphic art.
Dame Evelyn Glennie has spent her career expanding ideas about what a percussionist can be. The first musician to establish and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, she has performed around the world, commissioned more than 200 new works and built a recording career spanning classical, contemporary, experimental and improvised music. A double GRAMMY winner and BAFTA nominee, her influence reaches well beyond percussion itself.
At the centre of this print is the wonderfully named Diddle Egg Five, a hybrid drum rudiment that combines different sticking patterns into one rhythmic phrase. It's exactly the kind of language that makes perfect sense behind a drum kit but takes on an entirely different character when removed from that context and put on paper.
That's where Anthony Burrill and Theo Hersey come in. The rhythm becomes typography, with the words themselves providing the raw material for a bold, graphic composition. Rather than illustrating Glennie or her instruments, the artwork represents percussion through its vocabulary, turning something normally heard and played into something visual.
The print has been hand-printed by letterpress on Shiro Echo 200gsm paper by Theo Hersey at The Typography Workshop in London. The traditional printing process feels particularly appropriate for a project built around rhythm and repetition, giving the typography a physical presence that a conventional digital reproduction wouldn't have.
The edition is limited to just 100 prints, with each individually hand signed by Dame Evelyn Glennie and Anthony Burrill and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
