Gavin Harrison Autographed Print
There’s something particularly fitting about Gavin Harrison choosing the Single Flammed Mill for his contribution to ONE TWO THREE FOUR. Harrison has spent much of his career exploring what can be done with rhythm, developing a playing style where considerable technical complexity rarely comes at the expense of feel.
Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, King Crimson and The Pineapple Thief, Harrison has become one of the most respected drummers in progressive music. His approach often plays with subdivisions, displacement and rhythmic perspective, ideas he has also explored as an educator and in his books Rhythmic Illusions and Rhythmic Perspectives.
The Single Flammed Mill takes the sticking of an inverted paradiddle and introduces a flam at the beginning of each group. It's exactly the kind of deceptively compact idea that suits this collaboration: a short sequence of left and right strokes that can become something far more interesting once it moves around a drum kit.
Anthony Burrill takes that sequence and lets it dictate the composition. LEFT and RIGHT tumble diagonally down the page, their changing positions following the movement between hands. Burrill's heavy black lettering gives each stroke visual weight, while the generous white space makes the irregular rhythm of the arrangement immediately apparent. Look closely and it's a sticking pattern; from further away, it's simply a beautifully balanced piece of typography.
Printed by Harvey Lloyd in East Sussex on 240gsm Shiro Echo stock, the finished piece measures 50 × 70cm. Only 100 copies were produced, each hand signed by both Gavin Harrison and Anthony Burrill.
