I HAVE NO FUCKIN IDEA DIDDLE

Some drummers can give you the name, notation and sticking pattern for every rudiment they play. Zak Starkey would rather just play the drums.

That attitude sits at the heart of Rude Rudiment, Starkey's contribution to Teenage Cancer Trust's Drumming project. Asked to put his own drumming into words, the result was characteristically direct: I HAVE NO FUCKIN IDEA DIDDLE. Anthony Burrill and Theo Hersey take that response and make it the entire artwork.

Starkey has spent decades behind the kit with some of the biggest names in British rock. His career has included work with The Icicle Works, The Lightning Seeds and Johnny Marr & The Healers, followed by a long association with The Who beginning in 1996. He also recorded and toured extensively with Oasis, contributing to Don't Believe the Truth and Dig Out Your Soul.

Being the son of Ringo Starr inevitably forms part of Starkey's story, but his playing career has long stood on its own. Another important early influence was Keith Moon, who gave Starkey a drum kit as a child. Years later, Starkey would occupy the drum seat in The Who himself, performing with the band for nearly three decades.

Visually, Burrill and Hersey don't complicate Starkey's answer. I HAVE NO FUCKIN IDEA DIDDLE runs almost the full width of the print in a single uninterrupted line of tall black type, surrounded by a huge amount of white space. There's no drum notation and no attempt to translate the phrase into something more technical. Starkey's words are allowed to carry the piece.

It's an approach that plays directly to Anthony Burrill's strengths as a graphic artist. His work frequently takes short, direct pieces of language and gives them weight through typography, composition and traditional printmaking. Working with designer and letterpress printer Theo Hersey, Starkey's off-the-cuff response becomes a bold piece of graphic art without losing the humour that made it interesting in the first place.

The print was hand printed by letterpress on 200gsm Shiro Echo paper by Theo Hersey at The Typography Workshop in London in 2025. The physical printing process leaves subtle texture within the black letterforms, adding character to an otherwise deliberately stark black-and-white design.

Limited to 100 copies, each print is individually hand signed by Zak Starkey and Anthony Burrill and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
