The Who Royal Albert Hall 2017 Gig Poster

Created to celebrate The Who's 2017 performances at the Royal Albert Hall in support of Teenage Cancer Trust, this screen print marks a particularly special chapter in the band's long relationship with the charity.

Across two nights, The Who performed their landmark rock opera Tommy in its entirety, something the band had never previously done live. The shows included every track from the album before moving into a run of Who classics including I Can Explain, Who Are You, Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again. The first of the two nights also marked the 100th Teenage Cancer Trust benefit concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

The artwork comes from Josh Townshend, and for this particular poster the family connection makes his involvement especially fitting. Josh is the son of Simon Townshend and nephew of The Who's Pete Townshend, giving him a personal connection to the band's history as well as his own perspective as an artist and musician.

His design dives straight into the strange and surreal world of Tommy. At the centre sits a fractured, almost robotic figure surrounded by guitars, speakers, roses, pinballs and references to the imagery and ideas that have followed the album since its original release. The composition is dense and intricate, with new details emerging the longer you look at it.

The print itself is just as distinctive. Produced as a one-colour screen print on heavyweight 300gsm Peregrina Majestic Real Silver paper, the metallic stock becomes an integral part of the artwork. Rather than relying on multiple inks, the black screen-printed detail works against the reflective silver surface to create contrast, texture and depth throughout the design.

The poster forms part of our History of Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall series, celebrating the artists and performances that have shaped more than two decades of extraordinary live music in support of young people with cancer. Few bands are more closely connected to that history than The Who, who headlined the very first Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000.
