Drumming Artworks in Collaboration with Anthony Burrill and Theo Hersey
For Stewart Copeland’s contribution to Teenage Cancer Trust’s ONE TWO THREE FOUR series, the starting point came directly from the drummer himself.
Copeland drew out the Flammadiddle rudiment in his own loose, handwritten notation, complete with accents, sticking instructions and a characteristically explosive “BOOM”. Graphic artist Anthony Burrill then developed that drawing into a finished print, preserving the spontaneous quality of Copeland’s original marks rather than tidying them into conventional musical notation.
That approach makes this one of the most personal pieces in the series. The rhythm is not simply referenced in the artwork; Copeland’s own way of visualising it becomes the artwork. Across the sheet, repeated R and L markings sit alongside arrows, accents and handwritten fragments, turning a technical drumming exercise into something immediate, energetic and unmistakably handmade.
Copeland hardly needs introduction to anyone with an interest in modern drumming. As a founding member of The Police, his playing helped give the band much of its distinctive rhythmic identity, bringing together rock with strong reggae, ska and wider global influences. Away from The Police, he has built an extensive career as a composer for film, television, opera and orchestral projects, making rhythm and composition central to a body of work that stretches well beyond the drum kit.
The visual treatment comes from Anthony Burrill, whose work is built around direct language, bold forms and traditional printmaking. His art is held in the permanent collections of the V&A, The Design Museum in London and Cooper Hewitt in New York. For ONE TWO THREE FOUR, that stripped-back graphic approach gives drummers’ own patterns, phrases and ideas a life beyond notation, turning the mechanics of playing into something designed to hang on a wall.
Curated by drummer and educator Mike Dolbear, ONE TWO THREE FOUR brings together celebrated drummers and visual artists in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. This edition was produced by Harvey Lloyd Screens in Wadhurst in 2025 on 200gsm Shiro Echo stock. Only 100 were made, each individually hand signed by Stewart Copeland and Anthony Burrill and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. Teenage Cancer Trust Shop
