Nick Cave Autographed Photographic Print

From the stage, most concert photographs look out across the audience. Megan Cullen’s photograph of Nick Cave at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center feels as though it belongs to the crowd instead.

Cave is pushed to the far right of the frame, crouched at the stage edge with the microphone in his hand. In front of him, dozens of arms reach upwards; behind them, the steep banks of the arena are packed with people. It’s the unusual composition that makes the photograph so effective. The supposed subject occupies only a fraction of the image, yet your eye goes straight to him.

Taken during Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Wild God tour in 2025, it also captures something that has become central to Cave’s performances. He doesn't spend the entire show separated from the audience by the scale of the production. He frequently moves towards the very front, singing directly to people, taking hands and drawing the first few rows into the performance. Cullen has chosen exactly the right viewpoint to show that without turning the photograph into a conventional portrait. The audience isn't scenery around Nick Cave. It takes up most of the picture.

That makes this image an interesting addition to Good Energy. Other photographs in the series capture contact, movement or the chaos of being right inside a crowd. This one works through scale. One performer, thousands of people, and a narrow point at the front of the arena where the distance between the two disappears.

The decision to reproduce the photograph in black and white keeps attention on that contrast. Bright hands rise out of the dark foreground, Cave's profile is picked out against the crowd, and the people further back gradually dissolve into the shadows. The five-layer silkscreen process gives Cullen's photograph a physical, printed character quite different from viewing the original image on a screen.

Produced by White Duck Editions in Bath on heavyweight 350gsm stock, the finished A2 artwork is part of an edition of 100. Each copy is hand signed by Nick Cave and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
