Loyle Carner Autographed Photographic Print by Emily Chase
A striking black-and-white portrait of Loyle Carner at Brixton Academy, photographed by Emily Chase and produced as part of Teenage Cancer Trust's Good Energy series. Limited to just 100 copies, each A2 print is individually hand signed by Carner.
South London has always been closely tied to Carner's music. From the intimate storytelling of his Mercury Prize-nominated debut Yesterday's Gone through Not Waving, But Drowning and hugo, his records have drawn heavily on family, identity and the part of London in which he grew up. Brixton Academy has its own place in that story too: Carner has described it as one of his favourite venues in the capital.
Emily Chase's photograph strips the performance back to its essentials. Carner is caught almost entirely in silhouette, leaning backwards with his head raised while one hand remains wrapped around the microphone stand. Light picks out the edges of his face, clothing and arm against a grainy grey background, while the upper half of the image is given over almost completely to darkness.
It's a quieter image than many in the Good Energy collection. There are no raised hands or visible faces in the audience, but the sense of a live performance is still there in Carner's movement and posture. Instead of showing the crowd directly, Chase concentrates on the performer responding to the room in front of him.
That simplicity carries particularly well into print. Produced by White Duck Editions in Bath, the photograph has been recreated as a five-layer silkscreen on heavyweight 350gsm stock. At A2 size, the large areas of black, grey and open space give the image real presence without needing anything beyond Carner, the microphone and the light.
Only 100 prints have been produced, each individually hand signed by Loyle Carner and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
