Joan Armatrading Autographed Print
For Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall
Created for Joan Armatrading's appearance at the Royal Albert Hall on 13 April 2008, this original concert poster by Ben Beach is hand signed by Armatrading and individually numbered as part of a limited edition of just 100.
Armatrading performed on the closing night of the 2008 Teenage Cancer Trust concerts, joining David Gray, Newton Faulkner and Amy Macdonald for an acoustic evening before The Who brought the six-night run to a close. It was also another chapter in Armatrading's relationship with Teenage Cancer Trust, having previously supported the charity's Royal Albert Hall concerts.
By 2008, Joan Armatrading had built one of the most distinctive careers in British songwriting. Breaking through internationally in the 1970s, she became known for music that moved naturally between folk, rock, pop, jazz and blues, alongside a deeply individual songwriting style. Albums including Joan Armatrading, Me Myself I and Walk Under Ladders produced songs such as Love and Affection, Me Myself I and Drop the Pilot, while earning her multiple Grammy and BRIT Award nominations.
Her appearance at the Royal Albert Hall came during another significant period in that career. The previous year she had released Into the Blues, an album that took her further into the blues influences that had long run through her music and became the first album by a female UK artist to debut at number one on Billboard's Blues Albums chart. Her Teenage Cancer Trust performance drew on both that record and the much broader catalogue she had built over the preceding decades.
Ben Beach's artwork takes its cues from traditional concert bills, putting the artist, venue and date firmly at the centre of the design. Armatrading's name dominates in tall, distressed black lettering, surrounded by stars, heavy rules and similarly bold typography. A yellow halftone treatment fills the top of the poster before fading into white, while bright blue rises from the bottom around the Royal Albert Hall lettering.
That deliberately stripped-back approach gives the print a very different character from many of the more illustrative posters in the Teenage Cancer Trust archive. Printed as a three-colour screen print on heavyweight 300gsm stock, the slight distressed quality of the typography works particularly well with the screen-printing process.
