Going Home UK by Peter Blake
Created by Sir Peter Blake for Mark Knopfler’s extraordinary 2024 charity recording of Going Home (Theme From Local Hero), this signed limited-edition print brings dozens of the project’s musicians together against one of London’s most famous musical backdrops: Denmark Street.
The setting is a smart choice. Long associated with guitar shops, publishers, studios and songwriters, Denmark Street has been part of London’s music story for generations. Blake places the contributors in front of Hank’s Guitar Shop, using the location as a recognisable backdrop while several of the musicians hold guitars and another instrument sits prominently near the centre of the composition. The result feels part group portrait, part celebration of the players themselves and the guitar culture the project brings together.
The musicians represented reflect the remarkable scale of the recording itself. Mark Knopfler assembled an extraordinary cast for a new version of his instrumental Going Home, originally written for the 1983 film Local Hero. The recording brought together players including David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Slash, Brian May, Pete Townshend, Ronnie Wood, Bruce Springsteen, Nile Rodgers, Joan Jett, Tony Iommi, Jeff Beck, Sam Fender and many more. Ringo Starr and Zak Starkey contributed drums, Sting played bass, and Jeff Beck’s appearance on the track became his final recording.
For Knopfler, the project also returned to an important piece of his own history. Local Hero was his first film score, earning him a BAFTA nomination, and Going Home went on to become one of his best-known instrumentals. The 2024 recording expanded it into a nine-minute ensemble performance produced by longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher, with proceeds supporting Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America. Teenage Cancer Trust later reported that the release raised £750,000.
Blake is an especially fitting artist for a project built around so many generations of British and international music. A central figure in British Pop Art, his career has long intersected with popular music, most famously through his work on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Here, that familiar collage approach is turned towards a different kind of musical gathering, bringing players from rock, blues, pop and metal into one deliberately crowded scene.
The print was created exclusively for Teenage Cancer Trust and produced by Coriander Studios as a 22-colour screen print on heavyweight 410gsm Somerset Radiant White Satin paper. The edition is limited to just 150 copies, each individually numbered and hand signed by Sir Peter Blake.
