Frank Turner 2015 Royal Albert Hall Signed Screen Print

For Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall

$40.00

Created for Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls’ Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall on 29 March 2015, this limited-edition signed poster by illustrator Miles Tewson takes a beautifully restrained approach.

Against a clear blue field, a lone figure stands above a fragmented reflection, with the white space below breaking up the image like water, snow or light. It is simple, slightly surreal and unusually quiet for a gig poster.

That understatement suits Tewson’s work. The UK illustrator and designer is known for reducing an idea to a small number of shapes and colours, often using sparse compositions to create a sense of atmosphere rather than filling every inch of the page. His work has crossed illustration, branding and motion design, with clients including Warner Bros. Music, Studio Ramsay and Illy Caffè. Tewson has also spoken about his interest in capturing particular moments in time with limited colour palettes, something that comes through especially strongly here.

The show itself marked Frank Turner’s first appearance at the Royal Albert Hall. By 2015, the former Million Dead frontman had built a distinctive career from the collision of punk energy and folk songwriting, moving from small independent venues to Wembley Arena and the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony without losing the communal, singalong character of his live shows.

His 2013 album Tape Deck Heart had reached number two in the UK, and later that same year he would release Positive Songs for Negative People, another UK number two album.

Frank had already developed a personal connection with Teenage Cancer Trust before the concert, having visited the charity’s Nottingham unit and performed for young people there the previous year. Speaking ahead of the Royal Albert Hall show, he described the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts as a special institution and the opportunity to support the charity as an important one.

The night featured Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls, with support from Idlewild and Will Varley. The headline set reached across Frank’s catalogue, including The Road, Reasons Not to Be an Idiot, If Ever I Stray and Four Simple Words, alongside a solo acoustic section.

The fragmented reflection gives the composition its tension. The figure appears almost suspended between solid ground and broken mirror image, while the large areas of blue and white create a sense of distance around him. There is something introspective about it, but the image still feels crisp and graphic rather than sombre. The restraint is what gives the poster its character.

Produced as part of Teenage Cancer Trust’s History of Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall series, the print commemorates a specific moment in the charity’s long relationship with live music. It was screen printed in two colours by Prints of Thieves in Leeds on heavyweight 300gsm stock and is limited to 100 copies, each individually hand signed by Frank Turner.
