Dom Joly Autographed Print
Dom Joly has made a career out of finding humour in the absurd, so his contribution to Teenage Cancer Trust's series of comedian collaborations with Anthony Burrill feels particularly fitting. Do Something Totally Pointless takes the language of an inspirational quote and sends it somewhere considerably less sensible.
Best known as the creator and star of Trigger Happy TV, Joly's work has since taken him through comedy, writing, television and travel. His books and programmes have frequently involved journeys in search of the strange and unexpected, making a quote about going to extraordinary lengths for no particularly good reason feel entirely at home with his sense of humour.
Anthony Burrill turns Joly's words into a bold piece of graphic art. Tall black typography stretches across the bright blue background, with each part of the message given its own space before the oversized TOTALLY POINTLESS delivers the final line. A strong black border gives the design the appearance of a sign or official notice, a nicely straight-faced treatment for a message that is anything but.
Burrill's direct approach to typography has made words and short phrases central to his work, often finding impact through simple language, strong composition and traditional printmaking. Here, that simplicity works particularly well, allowing Joly's line to remain the focus while giving it a visual identity of its own.
Printed by Harvey Lloyd Studio in Wadhurst, the artwork is produced as a one-colour screen print on heavyweight 350gsm stock. The edition is limited to 100 copies, each individually hand signed by Dom Joly and Anthony Burrill.
Created for Teenage Cancer Trust, the series gives comedians the chance to rethink the inspirational quote in their own way, with Burrill transforming their words into original typographic artworks. Joly's contribution might not change your life, but that's rather the point.
