Courteeners Autographed Photographic Print
A huge London crowd, Courteeners on stage and the vast ironwork of Olympia rising overhead. Niall Lea’s photograph pulls back far enough to take in the scale of the night, with the band, audience and venue all sharing the frame. Converted into a five-layer silk screen print, the black-and-white image has a graphic quality that suits both the architecture and the sheer density of the crowd.
The photograph was taken at Courteeners’ headline show at Olympia London on 30 November 2019. At the time, it was the band’s biggest London headline date, with Liam Fray describing the 10,000-capacity show as a deliberate move away from more familiar London venues. The performance also included a string section on several songs, adding something different to a particularly significant night for the band.
Photographer Niall Lea has spent much of his career working where live music and artist storytelling meet. Based in the North West, he began photographing gigs while still at school before moving into music photography full time. His work has included Courteeners, Sam Fender, Johnny Marr, The 1975 and Pale Waves, alongside clients including Sony Music, Columbia Records, Universal and NME. Courteeners appear repeatedly throughout his live portfolio, including performances at Heaton Park, Leeds Festival and Tramlines.
Part of Teenage Cancer Trust’s Good Energy series, the print celebrates the relationship between performer and audience during live music. Lea’s photograph is especially well suited to that idea: Courteeners occupy only part of the composition, while the audience stretches across much of the image. It is as much a photograph of the shared experience of the show as it is of the band performing it.
Produced by White Duck Editions in Bath, the photograph has been recreated as a five-layer silk screen print on heavyweight 350gsm stock. The edition is limited to just 100 copies, each hand signed by Courteeners and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
