Baxter Dury Autographed Print

One word, pulled from one of Baxter Dury's sharpest recent songs. Adam Bridgland takes the title of Schadenfreude and gives it the whole page, setting the handwritten white lettering against a densely glittered black background.

Released in 2025, Schadenfreude came from Dury's album Allbarone, his collaboration with producer Paul Epworth. The record pushed Dury's familiar deadpan delivery into a more electronic, dance-driven setting, while retaining the sharply observed characters and uncomfortable humour that have run throughout his work.

The title is particularly well suited to Dury. Schadenfreude describes the pleasure found in somebody else's misfortune, and the song plays directly with that less-than-generous human impulse. Dury himself described finding “a streak of bitter humour” in other people's failures, setting the idea against music that feels far more buoyant than the sentiment behind it.

Adam Bridgland takes that tension somewhere different. Rather than illustrating the song or filling the print with references to Dury, he leaves the title isolated in a large expanse of black. The irregular white lettering keeps it from feeling too polished, while the glitter screen print means that an apparently simple background changes considerably as light moves across its surface.

Bridgland has worked with text throughout his career, often taking short phrases and familiar language and changing how they're read through typography, colour and traditional printmaking. A Royal College of Art graduate, his work draws on British graphic traditions including old advertising, travel posters and postcards, with the relationship between words and images playing a central role.

Hand-crafted as a single-colour and glitter screen print on 300gsm Somerset Satin, this A3 edition was commissioned and published by Teenage Cancer Trust. Only 100 copies have been produced, each individually hand signed by both Baxter Dury and Adam Bridgland.
