20 Years of Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall by Peter Blake

$1,144.76

Created by Sir Peter Blake to celebrate 20 years of Teenage Cancer Trust shows at the Royal Albert Hall, this large-scale silkscreen brings two decades of performances together in a single image. Rather than focusing on one night or one artist, Blake builds a crowded celebration of the musicians who helped make the concerts such an important part of the charity’s history.

The composition is unmistakably his. Dozens of performers are brought together in a dense collage against the interior of the Royal Albert Hall, with figures overlapping across generations, genres and individual shows. Among the artists represented are Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Ronnie Wood, Mark Knopfler and Nile Rodgers, all of whom have appeared as part of Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall history.

It is a particularly fitting approach for Blake. One of the key figures in the development of British Pop Art, his work has spent decades drawing on popular music, celebrity, collecting and collage. He remains best known to many people for co-creating the cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, but music has run through his wider career too, including album artwork for artists such as The Who, Paul Weller and Oasis.

That history gives this print a nice circularity. Blake is not simply illustrating a list of performers. He is applying the same collage language that became central to British visual culture in the 1960s to another piece of British music history, this time the artists who came together to support Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall.

The concerts began in 2000, driven by Teenage Cancer Trust patron Roger Daltrey, and went on to bring together some of the biggest names in music and comedy. Across the first two decades, audiences saw performances from artists including The Who, Oasis, Muse, Paul McCartney, The Cure and many more, with the shows raising tens of millions of pounds to support young people with cancer.

The scale and production of the print match the significance of the subject. It was produced as a 20-colour silkscreen on Somerset Tub Sized paper by Coriander Studios, a print workshop with a long association with Blake’s editions. The image measures 790 × 630mm, making it one of the larger and more substantial artworks in the Teenage Cancer Trust collection.

Only 150 prints were produced, each individually numbered and hand signed by Sir Peter Blake.
